Academic authors primarily publish their first book to earn tenure. I get that. But they also want them to be read. And tenured academic authors are, one hopes, primarily motivated by getting their work read. So I am asking (pleading?) that those of you who are working on book manuscripts and have not yet signed a contract, ask what price they intend to sell the book at, and whatever price they quote you, request a substantial reduction. Oh, and make sure you request a digital edition. Please!
Why do I care? The book publishing industry is all cattywompus, but especially has its pricing fuktup when it comes to ebooks. Check out this example:
That’s right, Amazon will rent you the digital edition for $38. ‘Nuff said.
